Sunrise Electronics adds low pin count devices to successful NEC product line

Now catering for an even broader range of cost sensitive target applications, dedicated distributor Sunrise Electronics has just added another new series of devices to the popular K Series family of microcontrollers from NEC with a choice of low pin count and I/O options.

These new K Series devices are ideal for smaller applications whilst at the same time offering the advantage of high scalability associated with this generation of NEC’s microcontrollers. This series of devices all include two on-chip oscillators (240 kHz and 8 MHz) , one 16-bit timer (event counter, PWM), one 8-bit timer (PWM), Watchdog timer, Interrupt controller, fast 4 channel 10-bit A/D converter, power-on reset function and low voltage indicator. NEC’s 78K0S 8-bit CISC core performs 16-bit operations in 200ns when operating at 10MHz, with no clock division. Parts are available with a choice of 1, 2 or 4KBytes of single voltage Flash memory plus 128bytes of RAM.

Three members of the family offer a choice of pin-out and I/O options. The 78K0S/KU1+ offers the smallest solution with its 8-pin SOP package delivering up to 6 I/O lines. Next up, the 78K0S/KY1+ has up to 14 I/O lines and is packaged in a 16-pin SSOP. The largest member of this series, the 78K0S/KA1+ is housed in a 20-pin SSOP, has up to 17 I/O lines, and in addition to all the features of the other devices it has a second 8-bit timer and a LIN–capable UART.

These K-Line devices are designed for operating voltages in the range 2.0 to 5.5 V and are specified for use under operating temperatures of -40 to +85 °C.

Sunrise Electronics provides complete design in support for the K-line family, including a range of development tools for this highly scalable family.

Once written for a specific K Series device, software modules can be re-used for other devices in NEC’s product family without changes. This is possible due to the consistent re-use of core and peripheral macros in all devices, including registers and address areas. On-chip debug facilities also reduce development times.
