Sunrise offers new 54 MIPS micro for high-end applications like automotive control
NEC’s new 32-Bit microcontroller provides fast processing and dedicated onboard safety features delivering real time performance in critical applications
Dedicated distributor, Sunrise Electronics has just announced the availability from NEC of its latest 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) for the automotive market, the V850E/RS1™.
The V850E/RS1 has a high-performance 40-megahertz (MHz) 32-bit V850E1™ controller core and dedicated on-board safety features including 10-bit 16-channel analogue/digital converter (ADC) with auto discharge and diagnostic functionality, buffered clocked serial interface (CSI), and flash memory with hardware in-circuit error correction (ECC). It is ideally suited for real-time, safety critical automotive applications such as restraint control modules and dashboard/cluster control.
Critical automotive applications, such as restraint control modules, require fast processing performance to deliver the real-time response needed when deploying an airbag at the instant of impact. The V850E/RS1 controller core can operate at 40 MHz and deliver 54 million instructions per second (MIPS), providing the best real-time performance in its class.
This new controller’s use of flash memory with hardware ECC greatly reduces the possibility of system error. Two versions of the MCU are available, one with 256 kilobytes (K) flash memory and 16K random access memory (RAM), and the second with 128K flash memory and 10K RAM.
Additionally, the V850E/RS1 MCU’s buffered CSI enhances communication with ASICs in the restraint control module to further ensure error-free operation. Communications include two CAN 2.0B bus interfaces and a LIN-compliant UART.
The V850E/RS1 microcontroller is packaged in a 100-pin 14mm x 14mm low quad flat package (LQFP). These devices are OSEK Volcano compliant (please visit www.volcanoautomotive.com for more information).
Engineering samples of the V850E/RS1 MCU are available on request, with mass production scheduled for later in the year. For customers adhering to manufacturing quality assurance processes, versions of the V850E/RS1 controller that are PPAP, AEC-Q100 and QS9000 certified will be available.

Sunrise Electronics is the only dedicated franchised distributor in the UK electronics market and provides a high level of technical design support to customers for the whole range of NEC semiconductor products including microprocessors, microcontrollers and ASICs as well as memory and colour LCD panels. The field sales team is technically qualified to ensure total support from design concept through to purchasing.
Sunrise is a direct ship distributor. The majority of shipments are delivered directly to customers from NEC’s own ISO9000 warehouse. This ensures reduced handling; correct packaging, especially for fine pitch surface mount devices requiring vacuum sealing, factory fresh product and timely deliveries.
