SUNRISE TARGETS 3-PHASE MOTOR CONTROL WITH NEW MICRO
Latest NEC 8-bit microcontroller offers 20MHz operation and dedicated functions
Dedicated distributor, Sunrise Electronics has just announced a new 8-bit microcontroller in NEC’s successful range of devices targeted at motor control applications.
NEC is enlarging its range of motor control products offering a choice of performance and peripheral options. The μPD78F0714 is a new 8 bit microcontroller which operates at 20MHz - much faster than previous 8 bit devices. It has 32Kbytes of on-chip single-voltage Flash memory and 1024 bytes of data memory.
Developed to meet the needs of a range of motor control applications including 3-phase motor control, this device has an inverter timer block with 10 bits resolution. It generates three phases x 2 PWM outputs (ie 3 normal outputs + 3 inverted outputs) and also provides a 16-bit up/down encoder timer, 8-bit dead time control and A/D trigger generation. It also includes a number of other standard timer functions, two serial interfaces (UART and CSI), and 48 I/O ports.
Other new features in this device include 8 channels of fast 10-bit A/D with conversion times of <4.8us (compared to 12us on previous parts). It also has Power on clear and low voltage indicators (not available in this series of devices before).
Standard operating voltage of the μPD78F0714 is 4.0 to 5.5V, with operating ambient temperatures in the range -40 to +85 ºC, but the device will operate down to as low as 3.7V (with speed derated to 8MHz).

Sunrise Electronics is the only dedicated franchised distributor in the UK electronics market and provides a high level of technical design support to customers for the whole range of NEC semiconductor products including microprocessors, microcontrollers and ASICs as well as memory and colour LCD panels. The field sales team is technically qualified to ensure total support from design concept through to purchasing.
Sunrise is a direct ship distributor. The majority of shipments are delivered directly to customers from NEC’s own ISO9000 warehouse. This ensures reduced handling, correct packaging, especially for fine pitch surface mount devices requiring vacuum sealing, factory fresh product and timely deliveries.
