Elpida DEVELOPS INDUSTRY'S FIRST 256 MEGABIT DDR MOBILE RAM FOR HIGH-SPEED, HIGH-DENSITY MOBILE APPLICATIONS
SDR and DDR Mobile Architectures Bring Low Power, Small Package Benefits to Digital Consumer Products
Sunrise Electronics, exclusive UK distributor for Elpida Memory, Inc. (Elpida), has just announced the availability of the industry's first 256 Megabit Double Data Rate (DDR) Mobile RAM components, along with a 256 Megabit Single Data Rate (SDR) Mobile RAM version, both developed for digital consumer products such as mobile phones, PDAs, handheld PCs, and digital cameras.
The high-density 256 Megabit DDR Mobile RAM devices offer a bandwidth of 400 Megabytes per second (MBps). Utilizing Elpida's advanced-technology 0.11 micron process technology, the new DDR Mobile RAM devices deliver a 90% power reduction compared to a standard 256 Megabit DDR SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory), and a 10% space reduction compared to design implementations that utilize two 128 Megabit Mobile RAM devices, thus saving significant resources and cost for mobile applications.
Elpida's new Mobile RAM devices have the Part numbers: EDK2516CBBH (DDR) and EDL2516CBBH (SDR). They are organized as 4M words x 16 bits x 4 banks, and have a programmable burst length (BL) of 2, 4, or 8. The devices achieve both high-speed data transfer and low-power consumption, they operate on a low-voltage power supply of VDD/VDDQ: 1.8V +/-0.15V and are packaged in a 9mm x 13mm, small FBGA package.
An Auto Temperature-Compensated Self Refresh (ATCSR) function allows the devices' internal self refresh timer to be set automatically, further decreasing power consumption. Auto TCSR eliminates the need for external operation/control because the die itself contains a temperature sensor that automatically changes the refresh duration. Auto refresh functions are offered at a rate of 8,192 refresh cycles/64 ms.
Additional features of the Mobile RAM devices include a Deep Power Down mode, Programmable Driver Strength and Partial Array Self Refresh (PASR). The products are also available as a "bare die" suitable for implementation in System-in-Package (SiP) or Multi-Chip-Package (MCP) designs.
The EDL2516CBBH 256 Megabit SDR Mobile RAM is sampling now in a 54-ball FBGA package, with volume production expected in Aug. 2003. The EDK2516CBBH 256 Megabit DDR Mobile RAM is sampling now in a 60-ball FBGA package, with volume production expected in June 2003.
