The 78K0 range of 8-bit microcontrollers are NEC’s most popular devices, and for good reason

The range contains more than 70 distinct products offering large memory sizes and a wide variety of on-chip features. There’s a device to suit every application

    - up to 3Kb on-chip RAM

    - up to 40x4 LCD
    - up to 53 line FIP
  • up to 10 x 10-bit A to D converter
  • up to 2 x 8-bit D to A converter on some devices
  • single channel DCAN on some devices
  • up to 8 timer channels
  • optional I2C on most devices
  • sub-clock on most devices
  • up to 88 I/O channels
  • wide voltage range - 1.8V to 5.5V
  

NEC has recently announced a speed upgrade to some devices in the 78K0 range. The fastest devices now run at 12MHz, where previously they achieved 10MHz

There are plans to increase this to 20-25MHz, allowing you to upgrade your product without re-design
